History
Nigel of Cotentin · 1071
Begun in 1071 by Nigel of Cotentin on behalf of Hugh d'Avranches, the original motte-and-bailey was replaced with a sandstone castle in the 13th century. It served as the seat of the Barons of Halton before passing to the Duchy of Lancaster, and was twice besieged during the Civil War.
