The seat of the Duke of Argyll and chief of Clan Campbell, a fairy-tale confection of round towers and gothic windows built on the shore of Loch Fyne, and still a working family home rather than a museum piece. The gardens are at their best in May, when the rhododendrons and azaleas are out, and the interior tour comes with detailed information boards in every room.

History
Archibald Campbell · 1746
Archibald Campbell, Earl of Ilay (later 3rd Duke of Argyll), laid the foundation stone in October 1746, creating one of the earliest Gothic Revival buildings in Britain. Designers William Adam and Roger Morris oversaw its construction. A devastating fire in 1975 nearly destroyed it, but extensive restoration preserved this family seat of the Dukes of Argyll.
