History
1120s
Founded as a Norman fortress in the 1120s, the castle grew over three centuries through successive royal and aristocratic expansions into one of England's largest strongholds. It reached its architectural peak under Robert Dudley in the 1570s before being slighted after the Civil War, leaving impressive multi-period ruins.
