History
William the Conqueror · 1068
William the Conqueror established a motte-and-bailey fortification here in 1068 to control the Midlands, replacing four local houses. During the 12th century it was rebuilt in stone, and after the Hundred Years' War its stonework was heavily reinforced, making it one of England's finest examples of 14th-century military architecture. The Greville family transformed it into a country house in the 1600s and held it until 1978.
