History
Robert, Count of Mortain · c. 1070
Built around 1070 by Robert, Count of Mortain (half-brother of William the Conqueror), to control the main route into Cornwall. The castle served as the caput of the Launceston barony and Earldom of Cornwall until replaced by Lostwithiel in the 13th century. Later used as a prison earning the name 'Castle Terrible', it remained the county town until Bodmin replaced it in 1838.
