History
Earl of Carrick · late 13th century
Built in the late 13th century, likely by an earl of Carrick, Loch Doon Castle guarded a strategic lochan in Carrick. In 1935, the entire eleven-sided castle was moved stone by stone from its island site to the lochside to prevent flooding from a hydroelectric dam, a remarkable preservation effort.
