Monea is one of the most architecturally complete plantation-era fortified houses left in Ulster, built in the early 17th century and set on private farmland that's free and open to walk around, bar December and January. Reviewers consistently call it one of the best-preserved sites of its kind in the county.

At a glance

Worth the trip

How complete the structure still is for a plantation castle - reviewers rate it above most comparable sites in Fermanagh for what's survived.

Before you go

There's an electric gate that locks at 6pm, so don't linger too late. It's closed over December and January, and the surrounding grass has nettles, so watch children's bare legs if visiting in summer.

What visitors say

Monea Castle reviews · 4.6 / 5 across 131 Google reviews

Visitors are largely impressed by how structurally intact Monea Castle is, several highlighting the ability to climb the spiral staircase and explore multiple floors, set in well-kept, peaceful grounds that are often nearly empty of other visitors.

A couple of practical notes stand out: the electric gate closes at 6pm, so timing matters, and one visitor warns about nettles near the castle catching an unwary child.

“Definitely must to see if you are around. Well- kept small castle with a nice view!”- Yasemin Aksoy, visitor review
