History
late 11th century
Built shortly after the Norman Conquest as a timber motte and bailey, later converted to stone. By the 13th century the great hall was transformed into a subterranean vault for storing royal wine. Richard II oversaw significant rebuilding in the 14th century, making it one of England's first castles equipped with cannon.
