A round, drum-shaped Device Fort built for Henry VIII to guard the approach to Southampton Water, later repurposed as a base for early seaplane trials - a detail the exhibits inside cover alongside the Tudor defences. History
1540
Built by Henry VIII from 1539 to 1540, Calshot Castle protected Southampton Water with advanced artillery fortifications. In the 20th century, it served as a seaplane base during both World Wars, adding an unexpected aviation layer to its Tudor origins.
