A medieval keep built into the corner of a still-largely-intact late-Roman fort overlooking Portsmouth Harbour - the outer walls are Roman, the keep inside is Norman and later, and the outer grounds are free to walk even if you don't pay for the keep. English Heritage runs the inner castle as a staffed site.

History
Romans (later Norman additions) · 3rd century (Roman); 12th century (Norman keep)
Romans built an extensive fortress here to defend Britain's south-east coast, with most of its walls still standing today. Normans added a substantial stone keep in the 12th century, transforming it into a royal stronghold and hunting lodge. Later it served as a military prison, notably holding over 2,000 captured African-Caribbean soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars.
