History
William Forbes · 1584
William Forbes, 7th Laird of Tolquhon, constructed this Renaissance mansion between 1584 and 1589 as an extension to the earlier Preston's Tower, retaining the medieval tower while adding luxurious new accommodation designed for display rather than defence. King James VI visited in 1589. The Forbes family held it until debts from the failed Darien scheme forced them to leave in 1718.
