Tolquhon Castle, Tarves, Ellon AB41 7LP

A late-16th-century courtyard mansion built for the Forbes family, more concerned with comfort and display than defence — the kind of castle built after the need for serious fortification had passed. Historic Environment Scotland opens it seasonally, and its decorative stonework survives well for a site with no permanent staff presence outside those months.

Worth the trip

The ornate carved doorway and courtyard frontage, characteristic of the shift from fortress to country house that defines the 1580s building.

Before you go

This is a seasonal-opening site, so confirm Historic Environment Scotland's current calendar before travelling out — there's no visitor feedback on file here yet to flag specific access quirks, which makes the opening hours the one thing worth nailing down in advance.
