A small Tudor artillery fort defending the western Solent approach, related in design to the Device Forts built along the south coast under Henry VIII, squeezed into a compact site right next to the Yarmouth ferry terminal. Costumed dressing-up and an interactive feel make it a good half-hour stop rather than a destination in its own right.
Trying on the period costumes - reviewers single this out as the most memorable part of an otherwise brief visit.
Budget well under an hour; non-EH members should weigh the roughly £8-10 entry fee against how quick the visit is, though EH members get in free.
Reviewers consistently describe Yarmouth as a small castle that can be seen in well under an hour, with interactive elements like dress-up costumes and games popular with visiting families, plus good views across the Solent. A couple of reviewers, particularly non-English Heritage members, feel the entry price is a little steep for such a short visit, and one notes the stairs make much of the upper interactive content difficult for wheelchair users to reach.
“If you’re a lover of history this beautiful landmark is situated right next door to the Gossip Cafe on the edge of the sea. It’s not a huge place but it’s packed with great views and wonderful stories. A ticket is…”— Niki Colet, visitor review
