History
Henry VIII · 1544
Constructed in 1544 as part of Henry VIII's coastal defence scheme against French and Holy Roman Empire threats, this fortress protected Portsmouth Harbour with an innovative angular design. It served multiple military roles-Civil War stronghold, Napoleonic upgrade, and World War II defensive position-before converting to a civilian tourist site in 1960.
