Another of Henry VIII's coastal Device Forts, this one guarding the approach to Portsmouth Harbour, with free seasonal entry and exhibits tracing how the fort's role changed over the centuries that followed. It sits right by the D-Day Museum, making a natural pairing for a longer visit.
The exhibits explaining how the fort was adapted and reused across four centuries, from Tudor artillery to more recent defence roles.
Entry is free but seasonal, so check it's open before travelling; if there's a wedding on, the inner keep can be closed off, though the battlements and courtyard cafe usually stay accessible.
Reviewers consistently praise the friendly, welcoming staff and the castle's history exhibits, with the Christmas illuminations event singled out as especially magical by one visitor. One reviewer's visit coincided with a wedding, which meant the inner keep was temporarily off-limits, but otherwise reviews are uniformly positive.
Henrician fort; free entry, seasonal
“A wedding was in progress when we visited so the inner keep was off limits. The battlements we still accessible as well as the courtyard cafe.”— Mike Walker, visitor review
