The island tower stronghold of Archibald the Grim, reached only by a small boat across the River Dee, when the boat is running. Reviewers report the crossing has been out of action for stretches recently, but the surrounding nature reserve, with well-kept mobility-scooter-friendly paths and resident ospreys, makes the walk worthwhile even without getting across to the island itself.

A recurring theme across these reviews is that visitors were unable to cross to the castle itself - whether because of ongoing works, the boat being out of service, or accessibility limits - so the visit often becomes a walk through the nature reserve to view Threave Castle from across the water rather than an on-site tour.
Even so, most still enjoyed the walk, wildlife (including nesting ospreys) and views, though one visitor was frustrated at finding yet another Historic Scotland site closed with no indication of when it might reopen.

History
Archibald the Grim · 1370s
Archibald the Grim built Threave in the 1370s on a River Dee island to secure his Galloway holdings and consolidate power. One of Scotland's first tower houses, it became the stronghold of the Black Douglas family. James II captured it in 1455 after the Douglas downfall, and it later served as a royal garrison before falling into ruin.
